Caroline Christensen is a former science teacher and a mother of three, as well as the creator of the Baby Belly Band. She lives in the Berkshire mountains of Connecticut about two hours from New York.

Caroline, 49, experienced problems with hernias during all three of her pregnancies and, like Carrie, was told she had to “grin and bear it”.

She told me: “I purchased what I could find on the market at that time which was an elastic fabric abdominal band with white straps over the shoulders attached. This did not function very well to alleviate my hernia pain, wore out before the end of my pregnancy and looked too medical and visibly peeked out from under my clothing.

“I began to modify it by sewing wide elastic straps under the pelvic floor area and replacing the straps with a more durable elastic bands. The pain subsided enough so that I could walk and actively move around again.”

After taking time off to look after her family, she decided to look into her invention and see if it could be sold as a product for all mums. Since then the Baby Belly Band has been given a Parent Test Parent Award in the USA as well as a Mom’s Choice Award Gold Level.

She runs her business from home and is supported by her husband, Erik. Last year, she gave up her job as a science teacher to concentrate on the business full-time.

  • A hernia is part of an organ which is displaced and protrudes through the wall of the cavity containing it (often the intestine through the abdominal wall).
  • Anyone who has a hernia should seek medical advice.
